Tax Prep Directory
About · Our Methodology

A directory is not a ranking.

AtoZ Tax is an editorial index of American tax preparers — CPAs, Enrolled Agents, registered tax preparers, and year-round bookkeepers. We curate listings from publicly available business data, then add context you can't get from a search result: credential checks, service mix, and what past clients actually said.

We do not accept payment for placement. We do not publish sponsored listings. A firm's position in our index reflects the strength of its public record — not a commercial relationship.

What we publish

Each of our 2,023 firm pages is assembled from the following sources, in this order of authority:

  1. IRS Preparer Directory & PTIN registry. Every paid preparer in the United States must hold a PTIN. We cross-reference listed firm names against the IRS's public registry when the firm advertises credentialed staff.
  2. State accountancy boards. Where a firm claims a CPA credential, the underlying license is verifiable at the state board. We link state boards from the vetting guide so readers can check before they engage.
  3. Google Business Profile. Address, phone, hours, and location data originate from the preparer's own verified business profile. Review counts and star ratings come from the same source, at the time of our most recent refresh.
  4. Firm websites. Service descriptions, specialty language, and booking links come from the preparer's own site. We quote sparingly and link to the original.
  5. Editorial annotation. Our editors read the available reviews and the firm's own descriptions, then write a short, human summary that highlights what a caller would want to know before picking up the phone.

What we don't do

  • We do not take referral fees, lead-generation payments, or advertising dollars from listed firms.
  • We do not offer "premium" placement, verified badges, or any paid-upgrade product.
  • We do not manage appointments, quote fees, or mediate disputes. Every phone number and website on the site routes directly to the preparer.
  • We are not a tax preparer. We do not provide tax advice, prepare returns, represent taxpayers before the IRS, or take responsibility for any engagement you form with a listed firm.

How we refresh

Listings are re-surveyed on a rolling quarterly cycle. Hours, phone numbers, and website URLs are verified at each refresh; credentials are spot-checked against the IRS and state boards. If a firm closes, merges, or changes name, we update — or remove — the page within the cycle following the change.

Before you engage Credential status is a point-in-time observation. Always verify a preparer's current PTIN directly at the IRS Return Preparer Directory and confirm CPA or EA status with the issuing authority before signing an engagement letter.

Our editorial voice

We write in plain American English. No marketing cadence, no "#1 best" superlatives, no vague appeals to "trust." We describe what the firm does, who it's built for, and what we could not verify. If a page is short, it's because the public record is thin — not because we're hiding something.

Corrections and removals

If you are a listed firm and believe we've described you inaccurately, write to our editor with the correction and a link to the authoritative source. We update within two business days. We also remove listings on request from the firm of record — no questions asked, no fees charged.
